Shot blasting is a process used to clean surfaces back to the base material. This process is carried out under controlled conditions and usually involves a high pressure airline and nozzle delivering abrasive ‘shot’ at the object. It removes all contamination such as rust, corrosion and paint to leave a clean surface for applying powder or wet paint.
The abrasive used depends on the required finish for the product. We currently use a glass abrasive with the granule size varying from 0.5 mm to 2 mm. We find this size works well when blasting alloy wheels, bike frames and various other parts. It is not too harsh on the metalwork so results in an excellent finish once powder-coated. In the majority of instances, items that are shot blasted will also be primed to ensure a completely smooth finish.
Link Powder Coating and Metal Finishing also offers a bead blasting service using glass beads to produce a polished finish and improve corrosion resistance. It is ideal for use on many metals including stainless steel.
Bead blasting involves blasting glass beads at the surface of the metal, erasing any defects and imperfections like scratches, burrs and rust corrosion to produce a smooth finish. It can also be done to remove existing paint in preparation for the application of a new paint coating. Bead blasting is a very time efficient and environmentally safe method for creating a pristine finish on all kinds of metal surfaces.
