Removal of oil, dirt, lubrication greases and metal oxides is essential prior to the powder coating process. It can be done using a variety of chemical and mechanical pre-treatments.
One of the pre-treatments we carry out most often is de-greasing. Any metal component that’s been machined, drilled, swaged or sawn is likely to have oil or grease on its surface which must be removed before coating. This is done by spraying, brushing or wiping a cleaning agent onto the component.
Once the surface is clean, applying a primer before powder coating can offer added protection to the metal work. Having a primer under the powder coat adds extra strength to protect against corrosion and ensures good adhesion of the final colour. Ultimately it helps ensure both the best possible finish as well as a longer lifespan of that finish.
